- Original price$80.00
- Discount (25%)-$20.00
- You save25.000% off the original$20.00
How to use it
- Enter the original price.
- Pick the discount type and enter the percent, the dollars off, or the sale price you've been quoted.
- Add a second discount if a coupon stacks on the sale price, and a tax rate if you want the checkout total.
- Read the sale price and what you save. In find-the-percent mode, read the real percent off.
Worked example
A jacket is $80.00 with 25% off and an extra 10% coupon at checkout, in a 7% tax state.
$80.00 × 0.75 = $60.00, then × 0.90 = $54.00. You save $26.00, which is 32.50% off. Tax: $54.00 × 7% = $3.78, total $57.78.
How it's calculated
Percent off: sale price = original × (1 − percent ÷ 100)
Dollars off: sale price = original − dollars off
Stacked discount: the second percentage is applied to the reduced price, not the original. 25% then 10% off is 32.5% off, not 35%.
Percent off from a sale price: (original − sale price) ÷ original × 100
Tax is applied to the sale price, after all discounts.
FAQ
Do stacked discounts add up?
No. A second coupon is taken off the already-reduced price, so 25% plus 10% is 32.5% off in total, not 35%. Stores rely on that gap.
How do I find the percent off from two prices?
Pick the find-the-percent option and enter the original and sale prices. The calculator divides the saving by the original price. A $60 item marked down from $80 is 25% off, not 33%; the percentage is always measured against the original.
Is tax charged on the original or the sale price?
The sale price. Tax applies to what you actually pay after discounts, though some manufacturer coupons and rebates are taxed differently in a few states.
Can I use this for a reseller offer?
Yes. Enter your list price and the percent off you're considering to see the accepted price, then put that price into the fee calculator for your platform to see what you'd keep.
