How to use it

  1. Enter the number you have.
  2. Pick the unit it's in and the unit you want. Both must measure the same thing: length, weight, volume or temperature.
  3. Read the result, rounded to four decimal places, and the factor for one unit if you need to convert more by hand.

Worked example

12 ounces to grams: 12 × 28.349523125 = 340.1943 g.

350°F to Celsius: (350 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 176.6667°C, which is why recipes say 175 or 180.

How it's calculated

Each unit is defined by an exact factor to a base unit: metres for length, grams for weight, millilitres for volume. result = value × (factor of the from-unit) ÷ (factor of the to-unit).

The factors are the international definitions: 1 inch = 25.4 mm, 1 pound = 453.59237 g, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, 1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL.

Temperature: °F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32; K = °C + 273.15.

FAQ

Are these US or UK measures?

US customary for volume: a US cup is 236.59 mL and a US gallon is 3.785 L. UK imperial pints and gallons are larger (568 mL and 4.546 L). Pounds, ounces, inches and feet are the same in both systems.

Why does a shipping label want ounces and pounds?

US carriers price by the ounce up to a pound and by the pound above it, rounding up. 1 lb 2 oz is 18 oz; 0.5 kg is 17.64 oz, which a carrier rounds to 18.

How exact are the factors?

Exact. The inch, pound and gallon are defined in metric terms by international agreement, so the factors here have no rounding. Only the final answer is rounded, to four decimal places.

Can I convert cups of flour to grams?

Not with this tool: that's a volume-to-weight conversion and it depends on the ingredient. A cup of flour is about 120 g and a cup of sugar about 200 g. Use a scale for baking.
